The thing for me and horror is not knowing the background of the killer. The mystery adds suspense. Explaining too much of the character gives it all away and then I end up trying to rationalize why this person is going around killing people. This is one of the reasons mainstream horror movies suck - they want to tell you everything about the killer and give you their origin story. You know what's scary? Not knowing the history of the psycho's life. Just give me a silent killing machine with no emotional background or purpose for killing. That's scary.

Agreed. The running formula today is tell us the background, then get on with the main story. I was literally "bored" with the new Halloween remake simply because I wanted Michael to going around and stalk babysitters. Isn't that what the first movie was all about? A Stalker? Then suddenly the stalker starts killing your friends and then goes after you? The background to Freddy is irrelevant. What's scary is that we don't know why the hell this is happening, just that it is happening. Stop hitting us over the head with a mallet and start realizing we have brains. We get it!
