Last night i went to the Deadmau5 show. As some of you may know I dj electro and tech house. (myspace.com/djmerovingian) I love deadmau5's tracks including his other projects BSOD and WTF?. I had the privelage of meeting Steve duda (Of BSOD) in NY and we had a few drinks and talked for about an hour. He was really down to earth and was a fun guy to hang out with. When i found out about this show i was really excited and i called my friend Mark and we bought the tickets about a month in advance. The show was at the Filmore @ Irving Plaza in NYC. It was my first time at that venue and i thought it was a little strange for a dj to be playing there. Well once the show started i realized why it was there and not a some shitty nightclub. At 11 pm BSOD came out together and started laying down some of the sickest beats ever. They were programming tracks live. This is not just dj'ing a song and then going to the next song. They had a sequenced track underneath and were creating original music on the fly with a packed venue full of people. It was a great performance and it was like nothing i have ever seen. The stuff they were making was so sick i thought i was going to vomit. It was amazing.
A half hour later deamau5 came out to do his set. He starting with a piano track and then mixed it with Arguru. From then it was non stop madness. I had heard on the internet that he wasn't a great dj. (mostly by broke haters probably) i have seen quite a few dj's in my time. (benny benassi, bad boy bill, sandra collins, tsuyoshi suzuki, etc...) and i can honestly say this was the best dance music event i had EVER been to. This was more than dj'ing, this was a real concert. A packed house full of people all moving to the creative and innovative tracks of deadmau5 for two hours. Yes, he played his OWN tracks for 2 hours and it never got old. The crowd kept cheering for more and more. Aside form the djing he was also doing some really creative stuff with triggering. The light and video show was really nice and his mouse head costume was sick. The eyes lit up in sync with the songs. If anyone reading this has a chance to see this show live you MUST go. It was really inspiring and honestly i think these guys are raising the bar for all dj's and producers. It definately wasn't the same old night club experience. Oh yeah they were giving away FREE t shirts all night. I got two of them and when we left they gave everyone free deamau5 usb drives!
